Marikina Coffee Guides

Which Cafes Are Near Marikina Sports Center?

The Sports Center and City Hall sit close together along Shoe Avenue, in the busiest civic corner of Marikina. If you have just finished a run on the track, a transaction at City Hall or an afternoon at the library, you are within a short walk of more good coffee than you might think. Here is what is nearby, with rough walking times and a note on what each shop is good for.

How did we measure the distances?

With our own walking-route data, counted from Marikina Sports Park. One honest limit: it measures to the street a shop is on, not to its front door, so treat every time below as a rough guide and let Google Maps settle the last hundred metres. The Sports Center is at the corner of Shoe Avenue and Sumulong Highway, and City Hall is further along Shoe Avenue in Sta. Elena.

Is there a cafe inside the Sports Center?

Yes. Kafein lists its address as the East Grand Stand of Marikina Sports Park on McDonald Avenue. That makes it the easy choice after a workout or while you wait for someone at a game. The athletics track is open to the public on most nights for a small fee, so a run followed by a coffee is a real Marikina evening.

Which cafes are about five minutes away on foot?

Three of them. Mlkteas & Beans has a stall at the corner of J. Chanyungco Street and Shoe Avenue. Viet Cà Phê on Guerilla Street is a Vietnamese-style coffee shop that reviewers call one of the biggest cafes in Marikina, with a must-try coconut latte. And IHO is a neighbourhood coffee shop on Guerilla Street corner 5th Street, behind Blue Wave.

Which is best for studying or working?

We would start with Kape Benito Community Café on Sparrow Street, about seven minutes away. Candy Magazine's 2023 list of study-friendly cafes in Marikina describes it as near City Hall and the Sports Center, with high-speed internet, universal outlets and ergonomic chairs. Viet Cà Phê is the other good option, simply because a big room means better odds of a table. Our main guide to study-friendly cafes in Marikina covers how to choose, and our Wi-Fi and outlets list has more shops to check.

Which cafes are ten to fifteen minutes away?

Celsius Cafe Lounge on Mayor Gil Fernando Avenue is roughly ten minutes away and is widely described as the first third-wave coffee shop in Marikina, so go there if the coffee itself is the point. Match Better Cafe is about the same distance. A little further, at around twelve or thirteen minutes, are Kape Cinco, known for its backyard-garden seating and group meal packages, and 1821 Café in San Roque.

What is close to City Hall and the public market?

Walk toward Bayan and another group opens up. Counting from the public market this time, Café Elena on E. Jacinto Street is about three minutes away and Cafe Uno on V. Gomez Street is about five. Rustic Mornings by Isabelo, the long-running all-day breakfast garden cafe, is about seven minutes from the market, and Franken Coffee Bar + Roastery and Baliktanaw Café on J.P. Rizal Street are about nine. Our San Roque coffee guide goes deeper into that side.

Which ones are open late?

Match Better Cafe closes at around 2 a.m., and Lungo Café on J.P. Rizal Street, near LTO Marikina and about seven minutes from the public market, runs from late afternoon to midnight. That makes this one of the better parts of the city to be in when an evening runs long. Our guide to whether Marikina has a 24-hour cafe has the full late-night list.

What is the Sports Center itself like?

Bigger than first-time visitors expect. It was built in 1969 as the Rodriguez Sports Center, turned over to Marikina in 1995, and renovated and renamed Marikina Sports Park in 2001. The main stadium has an athletics track, a football pitch and grandstands that seat 15,000. There is an Olympic-size swimming pool too. It hosted the Palarong Pambansa in 2023. On a game day the whole area is busy, so the cafes a few minutes further out are the easier ones to get a table in.

Where would we take a visitor?

For breakfast, Rustic Mornings, which is one of the most-reviewed cafes in the city. For a serious cup, Franken, where reviewers praise the pour-over, or Celsius. For a slow, quiet hour, Baliktanaw at golden hour. For a big group, Viet Cà Phê. And for something quick after the track, Kafein, since you are already there.

Is the city library nearby too?

It is. The Marikina City Library is on V. Gomez Street corner Shoe Avenue, next to Teatro Marikina, and it is free with a library card. A morning at the library followed by an afternoon in one of these cafes is about the cheapest good study day the city offers. Our guide to free places to study in Marikina has the hours and the house rules.

How do you get there?

Every shop page on this site has a how-to-get-there section, with the route in from Cubao and the last stretch on foot. Once you are in the area, most of these shops are close enough to walk between. If you are planning a longer loop, our Marikina cafe-hopping itinerary strings several of these into a route.
