What's the Best Coffee for Studying at Night?

The best coffee for studying at night is a modest one, taken early. That is a less exciting answer than a brand name or a triple shot, but it is what the research supports. Caffeine is very good at keeping you alert and quite bad at respecting your bedtime, so the skill is in the timing and the dose, not the drink. Here is how to order with that in mind.

How much caffeine is in a typical cafe order?

Mayo Clinic puts an 8-ounce cup of brewed coffee at about 96 milligrams of caffeine and a single shot of espresso at about 63 milligrams. A latte, a cappuccino and an americano are all built on one or two shots, so they land at roughly 63 to 126 milligrams however big the cup looks. Milk and ice change the size and the taste. They do not change the caffeine.

How much is too much in one night?

Regulators in the United States and Europe both put the daily limit for healthy adults at up to 400 milligrams, and European regulators add that single doses of up to 200 milligrams raise no safety concerns. We go through both in our article on how much caffeine is safe. In cafe terms, that is about three double-shot drinks across a whole day, counting whatever you had at breakfast. More than that mostly buys you shaky hands.

When should you drink it?

At the start of the session, not when you begin to fade. In one study, caffeine from coffee peaked in the body at about 42 minutes. Its half-life is roughly five hours on average and ranged from about two to almost ten hours between healthy men, as we explain in our article on how long caffeine lasts. A coffee at 7 p.m. is still working at midnight. A coffee at midnight is still working at dawn.

When should you stop?

About six hours before you plan to sleep. In a controlled study, 400 milligrams of caffeine taken six hours before bedtime cut total sleep by more than an hour, and the people in it did not reliably notice the loss. We cover it in our write-up of the caffeine and sleep research, and the Sleep Foundation gives the same six-hour guidance. If you plan to sleep at 1 a.m., your last coffee is at 7 p.m.

What should you order after the cutoff?

Something warm with little or no caffeine. Decaf is the obvious one, though it is not completely caffeine-free, as we explain in our article on decaf. A non-coffee drink, a hot chocolate or plain water works too. It still counts as an order, which keeps things fair for the shop, and you keep the ritual of something in your hand.

Is stronger coffee better for studying?

Not really. Robusta beans carry almost double the caffeine of Arabica, which is part of why Vietnamese-style coffee, traditionally made with Robusta, hits so hard. Our Arabica versus Robusta explainer has the numbers. More caffeine keeps you awake longer. It does not make you learn better. In one study, 450 milligrams raised anxiety in most people who rarely had caffeine, and nobody reviews well while jittery.

Why does coffee sometimes stop working?

Tolerance. In one experiment, after 18 days of heavy daily caffeine, people no longer felt its effects at all. The researchers called it the clearest evidence of complete tolerance in humans. If your usual order has stopped doing anything, a bigger one is not the fix. Cutting back for a while is. Our article on why coffee can make you sleepy explains the research.

Does everyone clear caffeine at the same speed?

Not at all. In the studies we cover, smokers cleared caffeine much faster than non-smokers, with a half-life of about 3.5 hours against 6. Oral contraceptives stretched it from about 6 hours to more than 10. So the six-hour cutoff is a starting point, and your own number may be earlier. If you sleep badly after an afternoon coffee, believe your own evidence over any average.

Will coffee help you remember what you studied?

Mostly no. Caffeine helps you pay attention, and attention is what gets information in. The remembering happens later, largely while you sleep. That is why a sensible coffee and a full night's sleep usually beats a heroic amount of coffee and three hours in bed. Our piece on whether studying in a coffee shop helps goes into what coffee can and cannot do for learning.

Does a coffee nap work?

There is some evidence for it. In a simulated night shift, 200 milligrams of caffeine taken just before a 30-minute nap improved attention and reduced fatigue on waking, compared with decaf. The idea is that the caffeine arrives as you wake up. The researchers describe it as a temporary measure and not a substitute for sleep, and so would we. The details are in our article on coffee naps.

Where can you get coffee late at night in Marikina?

A few shops stay open past midnight, including Malaya; Cafe and Café Rajah. Our guide to whether Marikina has a 24-hour cafe lists how late each one goes. If you are still picking a place to study, our main guide to study-friendly cafes in Marikina will help you choose.

So what should you actually order?

Here is the plan we would follow. One regular latte or americano when you sit down. A second one only if it is still more than six hours before bed. After that, decaf, a non-coffee drink or water. Eat something as well, since a meal is also a fair order for the table. And stop studying when you stop taking things in. Another coffee will not fix that. Bed will.
