FAQ: How Do I Know a Coffee Shop Is Really Local and Not a Chain?

Why does it matter whether a coffee shop is a chain or not?

This directory exists specifically to surface genuinely independent shops, businesses owned and run by the people actually behind the counter, rather than local branches of a larger brand dressed up to look small. Franchise and multi-branch shops already have far more marketing reach than a genuinely single-location neighborhood cafe, so we deliberately filter them out to make room for the businesses that need the visibility more.

What rule does this site actually use to decide?

Two tests, applied to every shop before it goes live, covered in our full directory guide: it has to be genuinely local, meaning it started in Marikina rather than being a branch of something that began elsewhere, and it has to operate from only one or two physical locations. A shop that fails either test gets left out or, if it was already researched and found to fail, deliberately marked as excluded with the reason written down rather than silently dropped.

How do you actually check location count?

By searching for the shop's name across Facebook, Instagram, delivery apps like foodpanda, and general web listings, and looking specifically for other addresses under the same name or brand. This is genuinely imperfect, a shop can quietly open a new branch after we last checked, or a listing can be outdated, so our research is treated as a snapshot rather than a permanent guarantee, and shops get re-checked periodically.

Can I do this same check myself before visiting a shop that isn't listed here?

Yes, and it is worth doing if a shop's branding feels more corporate than personal, a quick search of the shop's exact name plus "branches" or "franchise" will usually surface other locations if they exist. A founding story that mentions a specific owner by name, a specific origin story, or an explicit statement of only one or two locations are all reasonable positive signals, while a polished, template-feeling page with no personal story at all is worth a second look. Plain Sight Coffee's list of Philippine specialty shops is a useful reference for what genuinely independent shops tend to look like elsewhere in the country.
